The CP piano's sound was achieved using a traditional grand piano hammer action hitting real strings. However, Yamaha developed special strings that could be made shorter and require less of them but still be able to retain an authentic acoustic piano sound. So, unlike ordinary acoustic pianos that typically have three strings for each of the middle and upper register's notes and two strings for each of the bass notes, the CP piano used two specially designed strings for each of the mid and upper notes and just one string for each of the bass notes....

Dubreq was founded in 1967 by three British workmates: Brian Jarvis (inventor of the Stylophone), his brother Ted and Burt Coleman. They worked in the Broadcast / Film industry, dubbing and recording film sound tracks, hence the company name, 'Dubreq' (presumably, the 'q' was used to add an air of European mystique)!...

The M1000 was that popular that various editors cropped up, some for computer but notably one 3rd-party hardware progarmmer that put the most commonly used controls and functions at your fingertips. It was even styled in Oberheim's blue striped livery. I seem to recall it was quite expensive (GBP 350) but it gave a very pokey programmable synth with THE big Oberheim sound for a fairly reasonable price....

In fact, Gabriel bought one of the first ever Fairlights and was so impressed, his cousin, Steven Paine, set up a company - Syco - to distribute it exclusively and I have fond memories of going to Syco in London to get a demo. What I witnessed was (for the time) just absolutely staggering and I spent the journey home wondering how the hell I could ever raise the funds to buy one. Of course, I couldn't and the Fairlight was sadly to remain a pipedream for me....

The Taurus was originally planned as a component of a big synth system called 'Constellation' comprising the 'Apollo' (later to become the PolyMoog) for chords, the 'Lyra' for melodies and the Taurus pedals for bass accompaniment and the proposed system was not unlike some huge (and expensive!) hi-tech organ. Of course, this system never really saw the light of day but the PolyMoog and Taurus were sold separately instead (whatever happend to the 'Lyra'?!)....

The M1 was - rightly - a massive success and Korg sold a massive amount. It's hard to say how many exactly as much of it is wrapped up in urban myth but a common estimate is in excess of 100,000. This might not seem a lot but when you consider that most manufacturers are happy if a product sells 10,000 units, it puts the figure into some perspective!...
