Taz was designed for taz, a daily newspaper in Germany. The
first task was to design the all important headline
typeface. The brief was to develop a strong, trust-
building, visual identity, and to get rid of the seventies
design that no one had ever managed to change.
The color of the new face had to be about the same as its
predecessor, Futura Bold Condensed, so that the new visual
language of the paper would not be too much of a shock.
For a headline font, you want the lines to be spaced
vertically as close together as possible, therefore the
accents on the capitals canÆt take up too much space.
Impact is maintained by keeping ascenders and descendersshort.
